Ibis Care’s sustainability efforts are yielding results, with the aged care provider having avoided approximately 2.4 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions thanks to its ongoing commitment to responsible electronic waste recycling.
The e-waste clean-up effort between April and June involved the collection and responsible processing of some 595 kilograms of electronic waste, including metals and plastics from discarded electronic devices. The items will now be repurposed, reducing the need for raw material extraction and lowering the energy required to produce new products.
Alongside the environmental benefits, the program has also delivered important data security outcomes, with a total of 152 data-bearing devices being securely erased using Blancco Drive Eraser – a certified data destruction solution compliant with ISO 27001 Information Security Management System standards, ensuring sensitive information was permanently removed before equipment was recycled.
As part of the recycling initiative, a tree has also been planted on behalf of Ibis Care in Victoria’s Wimmera Biodiversity Hotspot, supporting the restoration of native habitat and helping strengthen biodiversity in one of Australia’s most significant ecological regions.
Ibis Care Chief Executive Officer, Mr James Carter, said the results demonstrate how practical actions can deliver meaningful environmental outcomes.
“Sustainability is about making responsible decisions today that will have a positive impact tomorrow,” Mr Carter said.
“Avoiding 2.4 tonnes of carbon emissions may seem like a small step in the context of a global challenge, but every little bit helps, and is part of a broader commitment to reducing our environmental impact wherever we can. We believe organisations have a responsibility to consider the legacy they leave for future generations.
“By responsibly recycling electronic waste, recovering valuable resources and ensuring the secure destruction of sensitive data, we’re demonstrating that environmental responsibility can be embedded into everyday operations in aged care.
The initiative forms part of Ibis Care’s ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability, responsible governance and continuous improvement, ensuring the organisation continues to create positive outcomes for both the community and the environment.
